Zoom in the ESL Classroom

Session 6: 10:10 AM-11:10 AM, Room 109

Want to give your busy adult students fewer reasons to miss class? What about 24-hour access to previous classes from a smart device or computer? Come learn how to use Zoom, a user-friendly video conferencing platform, to take your teaching into the 21st century and help meet your students’ needs. Technology has enhanced the teaching of all subjects, but integrating new software can be challenging. Some applications are not user-friendly, while others are easy to use but turn out to be useless. Zoom, a web-based videoconferencing platform, is both user-friendly and useful. It can take your classroom into the 21st century by offering numerous ways to accommodate your students’ needs and enhance your lessons. For example, students can “attend” virtually when they can’t make it class, and they can watch recordings of previous classes on a smart device or computer—at their convenience—to review lessons. In this demonstration, you will learn the basics of how to use Zoom in the ESL classroom. I'll discuss the various plans and pricing; how to set up an account; the platform’s main features; and basic site navigation. I’ll also discuss several ways to integrate Zoom into your teaching, and which online tools can enhance your lessons. In addition, I’ll show a recording of my adult school advanced ESL class, which I now teach remotely using Zoom while my students are gathered in the classroom.
