Session 5: 8:30–10:00 AM, Zoom Room 12

Abstract

Take a tour of the USA Learns Citizenship course, which was developed by the Sacramento County Office of Education, and includes hundreds of multimedia elements that teach the English skills and information needed for your learners to pass ALL parts of the naturalization interview. Preview the course's four units: 1) Steps to Becoming a U.S. Citizen, 2) N-400 Interview Practice, 3) Civics, Reading and Writing Practice, and 4) Your Interview and New Citizenship. Learn how to utilize this high-quality educational resource, which was developed by a team of 30 expert ESL and citizenship teachers, immigration attorneys, program specialists at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and multimedia developers. Brainstorm with peers about ways to use these materials to address the most challenging aspects of teaching U.S. citizenship, such as teaching difficult vocabulary, practicing speaking for the interview, providing sufficient listening practice, checking for comprehension, and more. Learn how to quickly create your own free online course based on USA Learns' content (usalearns.org/teacher). Using USA Learns' teacher tools, you can easily monitor your students' progress and access reports about scores, time spent, and number of attempts per activity. Get helpful ideas from experienced teachers about how to successfully use the USA Learns website and its resources.
