Connecting the Community: Introducing the Digital Navigator
Session 1: 2:45–4:15 PM, Zoom Room 5
Abstract
The shift to digital learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic placed many adult learners in unfamiliar territory. Based on a model developed by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance, Highlands Community Charter and Technical Schools (HCCTS) created a new position, Digital Navigator, to help connect their adult learners to technology and training. Teachers and paraeducators found themselves spending a lot of time troubleshooting technology with students. Digital Navigators, through the support they offer, free up time and resources for educators that can now be used to facilitate learning. In addition to the staff position, HCCTS created a novel Career Technical Education course designed for high school and English Language Development students which will prepare them to become Community Digital Navigators. Through a combination of coursework and an internship, students will gain knowledge and skills which will help them (re)enter today’s competitive workforce. Through an engaging interactive presentation, including breakout rooms, multimedia, and discussion, participants will learn how to design and implement the Digital Navigator position and/or the Community Digital Navigator Career Technical Education course at their own agencies.
