Make Google App Projects to Help Online ESL Students Get Acquainted

Abstract

Whether a proficient online instructor or teaching online for the first time, adult ESL faculty are looking for creative, productive, interactive activities to develop language skills. In addition, unlike face-to-face environments, it can be more challenging for ESL learners to get acquainted in online environments. The presenter will demonstrate four collaborative online projects which utilize free Google Apps (Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Photos, Google Jamboard) that engage the learners to share about themselves and get to know their classmates in a non-intimidating manner. The projects can be disseminated either synchronously or asynchronously and can be completed by students on a computer or mobile device. The projects combine language skill development, technology skill practice, and getting acquainted topics. Each project involves a four-pronged approach: 1. The instructor develops an initial assignment using one of the apps that will gather information from all students into one document, presentation, photo album, or digital bulletin board; 2. The instructor shares the collaborative assignment for students to participate live or for homework; 3. The instructor designs a follow-up activity from the collected student data; and 4. Students complete the activity utilizing a productive language skill (i.e. speaking or writing). Workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience a live demo of each app project and sample follow-up activities.
