Engaging Noncredit ESL Students in Online Learning: Tips and Tricks

Session 6: 10:30–12:00 PM, Zoom Room 6

Abstract

COVID19 has given all of us challenges that we thought we would never have to face. Since March 2020, we have been forced to deliver instruction remotely, and our students are forced to learn via their devices. By the time the fall semester of 2020 arrived, we knew that although the challenges of remote teaching and learning were still great, we were able to anticipate many of the challenges. Remote teaching and learning also have allowed us to see a new opportunity: noncredit fully online ESL classes. We are part of a cohort of the first instructors at City College of San Francisco who have signed on to teach fully online (100% asynchronous), noncredit ESL classes, from literacy to high intermediate levels. We have found that determination, hard work, collaboration, innovation, and technology have given new ways for us to deliver content to our limited English-proficient students. Come and listen to our stories. We will share our experiences and talk about our favorite tools we are currently using that are effective, fun, engaging, and easy to use even for noncredit ESL students. The tools we would like to feature are Padlet, Canvas Studio Quizzes, and H5P. We will talk about how we use these tools at our specific levels and how students respond to and interact with these tools.
