Teaching EL Civics in a Distance Learning Environment

Session 6: 10:30–12:00 PM, Zoom Room 9

Abstract

Covid-19 forced adult education agencies to scramble to provide distance learning ESL classes for their communities. Regardless of major structural changes to agency functions, state and federal WIOA reporting requirements had not been adjusted. CACE quickly implemented, through our EL Civics coordinator, a distance learning model of the EL Civics Telemedicine (289C) COAAP using a Google Slides based Choice Board as a digital teaching tool. The Choice Board was specifically designed as a guide to help teachers efficiently integrate and present the EL Civics material from the teaching to the testing process. The CACE DLAC team will demonstrate how this organizational method can be effectively used to deliver instruction for an EL Civics unit in a blended or distance learning classroom.
