Setting the Standards: How to Bring the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to Life in Our Digital Classrooms

Session 2: 8:30–10:00 AM, Zoom Room 5

Abstract

The English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) for Adult Learners were developed in 2016 as a guide to providing instructors with a bridge to connecting English Learners to the high academic standards of the CCRS. Within the four walls of the classroom, this has meant energized students working together around a table, teachers weaving their way through the classroom as they work beside their students, and cellphones making their appearance for the occasional Google Search or game of Kahoot. In the digital classroom, however, where class is both synchronous and asynchronous, how do we create a fertile online environment in which students learn collaboratively, research effectively, and connect to their community? Will it ever be the same, or can we make it even better than it was before? In this interactive workshop, we will work together to highlight and develop ELPS-aligned strategies for taking our digital English Learner instruction to the next level. These “next day” lesson strategies and instructional resources will help make the ELPS work for your online classroom, increasing the engagement, academic achievement, and community building of your class along the way.
