Remote Testing! Finding Success with CASAS and EL Civics Assessments in a Distance Education World

Session 1: 2:45–4:15 PM, Zoom Room 1

Abstract

In a remote learning environment, schools have been charged with the task of creating innovative ways to assess students. Corona-Norco Adult School’s CASAS and EL Civics assessment teams worked diligently to think outside the box to maximize available resources while implementing creative strategies to assess student learning. Allow us to share with you the resources we have collected and refined from our training and assessment partners. We will discuss the critical first steps for implementation, best practices for administering assessments, and ideas for increasing learner outcomes. Participants will gain ideas for troubleshooting problems and pitfalls to avoid. This session will focus on remote CASAS and remote EL Civics assessments with time for questions and answers. This information is appropriate for administrators that are interested in learning from our experiences in creating testing teams, establishing effective systems, and adhering to policy for test administration. Teachers and support staff will benefit from this session as we discuss teaching strategies to support preparation for online test taking and creating student buy-in from day one. We will also discuss ideas for selecting appropriate EL Civics COAAPS for remote testing as well as designing assessments using digital tools.
