Using Online Platforms with Low-Literacy Students

Description
During this session, the presenters will show participants specific functionalities of each platform (Ellii and Canvas) that have proven useful for low-literacy learners. The presenters will provide specific examples of functionalities that they have personally used in the classroom and best practices for encouraging digital literacy amongst low-literacy students. The presenters will also explain their unique perspectives of using these platforms and others, as both students and as instructors. Given both presenters' non-traditional experiences as language learners and instructors, the session will also include facilitated discussion.

Wendy Okada
Mt. Diablo Adult Education
Wendy Hanae Okada has been teaching English and French since 2013. She has taught in France, Switzerland, Thailand, and in Oakland. She is currently an ESL instructor at Mt. Diablo Adult Education in Concord in addition to a French instructor at Acalanes Adult Education. She is passionate about making technology accessible for all, intercultural competence in education and social justice.
Tatiana Dutra E Mello
Mt. Diablo Adult Education
Tatiana Dutra e Mello has been a language teacher for the past ten years. She believes in the power of technology to promote inclusion and facilitate learning. She currently teaches ESL at the Mount Diablo Adult Center in Northern California.
