Description
As online learning has become an integral part of adult education, teachers face the challenge of capturing learners' attention and sustaining their motivation over time. This session covers effective methods for promoting engagement and retention in online environments. Presenters will provide evidence-based approaches and examples of methods and strategies for ? Onboarding to build a sense of belonging through community-building, interactive activities, discussion forums, and live class sessions ? Encouraging student persistence with goal-setting and instruction that is relevant to students’ needs and goals, multiple touchpoints for feedback to and from students ? Leveraging user-friendly tech tools to ensure active participation in synchronous and asynchronous settings

Chris Vela Che
OTAN, San Diego Community College District - Continuing Education
Chris has been an adult multilingual educator for more than 15 years. Most of her teaching experience has been with low-literacy to beginning-high English language learners. She has also facilitated workshops and presentations about technology integrations for student engagement and persistence.

Kristi Reyes
OTAN, MiraCosta College
Kristi Reyes, M.A., Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), is a tenured faculty member in the Noncredit ESL Program at MiraCosta College, California, with almost three decades of experience teaching adults. Kristi has conducted a number of different tech-integration workshops and webinars for OTAN since 2009 on topics including digital storytelling, web-based tools, teaching vocabulary with technology, online teaching best practices, teaching hybrid courses, and project-based learning.
