Northstar Digital Literacy: Implementations with Porterville Adult School

Description

The Northstar Online Learning Program helps Adult Education students build digital skills in ESL, ABE, ASE, and CTE programs. It offers self-paced lessons on using the internet, email, and other tools needed for school and work. ESL students improve language and tech skills, ABE learners build basic skills, and ASE students prepare for high school equivalency and jobs. With easy tracking and assessments, Northstar fits well into adult education classes. Description: The Northstar program is a digital literacy program that our school purchased. We use the program for diagnostics to determine where the student should be placed in our curricula. If the student cannot pass the first initial tests with a 75% or better then they are assigned to the computer teacher until they pass, but this time with an 85% after training. The two tests we administer are the “basic computer skills,”and the “using email.” I will put our link up so you can join and take the two tests. They are not as easy as

Hi, my name is Jeff Bochat and I live in Springville California. I am half way through my 21year of teaching. Ten plus of these years I was a computer teacher on campus. I have taught middle school, and high school in computer classes for many years. This is my third year at Adult School and I love it. It is nice to have students that want to be here than the other way around. Computer technology has always been my passion.

Pedro Uribe

Porterville Adult School (ESL, HI-set, HSD)

Hi, I am Pedro and I am an ESL, HI-set, and HSD instructor. I use computers all day every day in my instruction. They might be practicing the HI-set tests or working on Edgenuity for high school. Teaching now for 23 years has led me to believe that technology, used the right way, is very beneficial for student growth.
