In this session, we will look at technology integration and some simple ways to increase student involvement and learning with Liz Kolb’s Triple E Framework. Participants will learn how they can easily add these activities to their current lesson plans. We will stress the importance of focusing on the learning goals first and the technology second. We will share a lesson plan and then show how we can add activities to ENGAGE, ENHANCE, and EXTEND the learning.

HyFlex: Guidance and Discussion on Implementing Innovative Instruction

The Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) model gives students agency to choose how they engage in learning: in-person, synchronously online, or asynchronously online. This panel discussion begins with a brief intro to HyFlex. Then, expert teachers and PD leaders share insights and answer questions about HyFlex in action. Participants learn about the Guide for Design and Implementation of Hybrid–Flexible (HyFlex) Models in Adult Education and videos showing teachers' set-up and implementation of the model.

Transforming and Aligning EL Distance Learning

This presentation highlights our work to transform and align our EL Distance Learning programs to better serve students unable to attend class in person or those waiting for an open spot in our extremely impacted EL program. In addition to Distance Learning as an independent study model, we will explore piloted hybrid options that double capacity in in-person classes. Teacher support in these transitions as well as digital literacy integration will drive our ability to move forward and succeed.

How do the best and most classic games effectively guide novices by placing "gates" in the narrative? How can this benefit and create persistence for our ESL learners in computer labs? Persons transitioning from incarceration to the streets face many challenges. With priorities of basic needs taking precedence, going to school can feel like a luxury. Setting these individuals on the right path that includes an education provides the greatest hope for avoiding recidivism. This session will focus on the goals of the CDCR educational programs and provide an opportunity for the participants to voice their needs as the recipients of the recently incarcerated students.

At any given time, there are 53,000 people on parole in California needing academic or vocational education to obtain employment. Rehabilitative programs in CDCR have created lifelong learners who hope to continue learning once they are released. In this session, you will learn what to expect from a student returning from prison, how to best support their success, and what steps you can take towards building a connection between the education and justice systems.

In closing, the presentation will culminate with samples of how they use Microsoft’s Flip to promote and extend work skills beyond the classroom.

Cyber High, Changing Lives One Future at a Time

Cyber High is one of the originators of asynchronous online coursework, circa 1998; although our roots date to 1978 via the Pass Program put forth in the service of California’s Migrant student population (whom we still serve in large percentage today). It is owned and operated by one of the largest county offices of education in California, the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools. It offers 79 online courses, 7 in Spanish, 47 courses are appropriate for A-G, and one CTE course.

California Adult Ed Technology and Distance Learning – A Look at the Data

The Technology and Distance Learning for California Adult Education report provides an overview of distance learning in WIOA-funded adult schools and noncredit community college programs. We present preliminary findings from the 2022-2023 report and invite participants to discuss online and blended learning as well as the impact of technology adoption in the delivery of program offerings as we look at the data. We also will reflect on the challenges and opportunities in a post-pandemic world.
