(Cancelled) ELL Writing - Read Out Loud to AI, Receive Feedback, Revise

ELLs can read their writing assignments out loud to AI chatbots, practicing pronunciation and fluency, then revise their writing to include AI-suggested vocabulary, collocations, and linking phrases. Bring a laptop to follow along from the perspective of a hybrid-ESL student. We’ll use eslvideo.com's commercial "chattybots" in this workshop, though other listening/speaking chatbots are available. The presenter will share how these tasks were set up in Canvas along with student work and feedback.

Effective Practices for High Quality Online Teaching

Some agencies and teachers are hesitant to offer and teach hybrid courses for beginning and intermediate ESL students out of the misguided belief that this population lacks the prerequisite language proficiency or digital skills to study online. The presenters outline high-touch practices that onboard students effectively, engage students, and motivate them to complete online work and persist in their hybrid classes, walking away with new levels of self efficacy and skills.

Cyber High, Changing Lives One Future at a Time

Cyber High is one of the originators of asynchronous online coursework, circa 1998; although our roots date to 1978 via the Pass Program put forth in the service of California’s Migrant student population (whom we still serve in large percentage today). It is owned and operated by one of the largest county offices of education in California, the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools. It offers 79 online courses, 7 in Spanish, 47 courses are appropriate for A-G, and one CTE course.

California Adult Ed Technology and Distance Learning – A Look at the Data

The Technology and Distance Learning for California Adult Education report provides an overview of distance learning in WIOA-funded adult schools and noncredit community college programs. We present preliminary findings from the 2022-2023 report and invite participants to discuss online and blended learning as well as the impact of technology adoption in the delivery of program offerings as we look at the data. We also will reflect on the challenges and opportunities in a post-pandemic world.
