Description

In this session, presenters from Burbank Adult School will be talking about what has worked (as well as what hasn't) to make their venture into the digital realm a successful endeavor. You will learn about the different resources that our online students have been using such as Canvas, Burlington English, Ellii, and more! This class was started as a way to alleviate wait lists for our level 2 ESL classes, but has given students much more than that. This program has helped Burbank retain students who otherwise would have no way of continuing their ESL program. You will also hear about how Burbank helped students build digital literacy skills to make the online class accessible for every student.

Jake Baldwin

Burbank Adult School

Jake is an ESL and IET instructor at Burbank Adult School. He is a big proponent of incorporating digital literacy skill development into his ESL instruction. He has presented at a handful of conferences on how teachers and students can use AI to enhance learning. He has also presented at the Allied Health Collaborative about a bridge program he helped create between the ESL program and the Medical programs at Burbank Adult School.

Yanira Chavez

I bring 25 years of experience in adult education, including extensive work as a WIOA/CASAS coordinator. For the past three years, I’ve taught both the Basic Computer for ESL course, and the Soft Skills for the Workplace class. As a Point Person representing Burbank Adult School, I have presented at multiple LARAEC conferences as well as the DTLS conference in Spring 2025.

This is my 30th year as a teacher and administrator in K-12, CTE, and Adult School settings. It is my third year at Burbank Adult School and second as the Principal. I presented at TDLS in 2024 and at the CCAE Regional Conference in Palm Springs this fall.
